There has been a series of pictures appearing in the La Crosse Tribune depicting scenic drives in the country and just how to reach the points shown. Recently the above picture was shown, with the caption, "For a Scenic Drive on Sunday." It could be on any day from here, for the scene is located just about eight miles south of Black River Falls on Highway 54, a short distance north of the village of Irving. It has been a favorite view of many years. Nearby is Nichols' Park, where many picnic.
Just at this point the rock with a bronze tablet commemorating the death of the late P. J. Hoffman is standing. He was in charge of the construction of the road at the time of his death. He was shot in a fit of anger by a man who had come from away to work on the job.
There are many lovely spots along the river but few that are to be seen from so high a point as the one shown above. To the right is a high rock bluff from which a view of the country for miles can be seen. It is not difficult to climb.
