Hoffman crews began clearing and grubbing the first week of April on the Design-Build project in Oronoco, MN, just north of Rochester.
The Design-Build process is new to Hoffman. The past two months have involved a steady stream of design meetings and plan package reviews for HCC's project management. Shawn LaFaunge says that it's a challenge to plan accordingly without having the complete plan set in your hands. Ron Overlien said, "It's amazing to watch a set of project plans start from a simple alignment, to plans approved for final construction." Chad Johnson has enjoyed the opportunity to provide feedback that results in cost savings and better constructability before the final plans are issued.
There has been a lot of interaction with the public affected by the project. On April 10th, construction, design and public relations team members are putting on an open house to which 4,000 people were invited.
A proactive atmosphere is fostered on the project with Quality, Safety and Environmental training required prior to working on site. URS, the design team from Minneapolis, is utilizing their experience gained on the previous design-build job in Rochester, the Roc 52. In addition, the project is part of a unique consultation program with the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (OSHA), who will be providing their expert advice to help maintain a safe project.
The construction schedule is very aggressive, placing added pressure on the design team and local utilities that are relocating for the project.
Ron Overlien stated, "I appreciate the positive atmosphere and attitudes we have experienced with the design build team here. Everyone within the team knows their responsibilities and are working towards a common goal in a highly productive, well organized manner."
